prep & maintenance instructions
The prep and the maintenance of your spray tan plays a big role in how the spray tan looks, how long it lasts, as well as how it fades. Following these instructions will ensure you get the best wear out of your spray tan lasting approximately 5-10 days.
Prior to tan
- EXFOLIATE! Exfoliating your skin prior to your tan will allow for the most even tan. Scrubbing off old dead skin gives the spray tan a “fresh slate of skin” to attach to. IMPORTANT: Make sure to scrub off any remaining sunless tan you may have from a previous tan. Spraying over an old spray tan will cause it to look splotchy. Use an oil free exfoliator and a dry towel to aid in exfoliation 6-24 hours before sunless application.
- Do all shaving, waxing, and any other hair removal 12+ hours before spray tan. Spray tanning too soon after hair removal can cause bronzer to get into pores causing the appearance of black spots on your skin.
- Come to your appointment with clean skin, free of makeup, lotion, perfumes, and deodorant.
- Bring loose dark clothing as well as sandals to change into after your spray tan. Tight clothing can possibly rub off the tan causing lines and uneven spots.

- Avoid getting wet or sweaty until your first rinse.
- Avoid heavy sweating, chlorine pools, and saunas up to 24 hours after your tan.
- Always make showers quick and gentle. No scrubbing or exfoliating, and always pat skin dry.
- Keep shaving to a minimum, however when you do shave make sure your razor is fresh and to lightly press. Using a tan extender after shaving will help replenish color that is lost after shaving.
- ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS MOISTURIZE!!! This is the key to make a spray tan last and fade naturally. Do not skip a day of lotion otherwise the skin can dry out and the tan can flake off and become splotchy. (Tip: Drinking plenty of water will help keep skin moisturized and glowing.)
- Wear perfumes on clothing and not directly on skin.
- There is no SPF in a spray tan, if you need a sunscreen still use it. Use a lotion sunscreen versus an aerosol. The aerosol sunscreens have alcohol in them which will strip the tan.
- Use soaps and lotions that are free of perfumes, alcohols, parabens, sulfates, and mineral oils. NO DOVE PRODUCTS!!
